Homeownership Education

Individuals working toward home ownership must complete 300 hours of 'sweat equity' and a series of education workshops.

In 2013, Greater Birmingham Habitat for Humanity opened its Homeowner Workshop Center in Irondale, next door to the Habitat ReStore on Crestwood Boulevard. The Center, made possible through grants from the Community Foundation of Greater Birmingham, State Farm and Wells Fargo, enables Habitat to offer workshops to the general public and Habitat partner families.

Habitat's Homeowner Workshop Center is located at 7954-A Crestwood Boulevard in Irondale. Those interested in upcoming workshops can email Robyn or call (205) 780-1234.

Current Homeowner Workshops:

  • Money Matters - Learn to manage money by preparing a personal spending plan and identifying ways to decrease spending and increase income.
  • To Your Credit - Learn to read your credit report and how to build and repair your credit history.
  • Understanding a Mortgage - Learn what goes in a mortgage, including escrow accounts. Learn how elderly and disabled individuals can apply for property tax exemption.
  • Protecting Your Home - Explore important aspects of fire and tornado safety, as well as various aspects of homeowner's insurance.
  • Basic Home Repair - Learn how to repair and maintain household items in this hands-on, interactive class. The class focuses on fundamental tasks such as patching drywall, painting, repairing toilets, maintaining lawns, and pest control.
