2010 Build Begins May 1st!
Women Build is a house funded and built by women. Help build a house alongside hundreds of women in the community in honor or in memory of special women in your life. It empowers women to learn construction skills, develop friendships and see positive results of their efforts and contributions - all to eliminate substandard housing and encourage family stability.

Honor or remember special women in your life by participating in Habitat for Humanity Greater Birmingham's 2010 Women Build. Construction begins Saturday, May 1, 2010. Volunteers are needed Tuesday - Saturday through June.

The Women Build is a great opportunity to come out and learn new skills, or show off the skills you have, among your fellow women.

If you would prefer a bit of training in advance, Habitat Birmingham is coordinating FREE Lowe's How-To Clinics on framing basics and vinyl siding installation.
Clinics will be held in April at the Lakeshore location of Lowe's. More details are coming soon; check back for updates!

Women Build & Habitat Facts
• Women make up 50 percent of Habitat’s volunteer force; yet often because of lack of training, they account for less than 15 percent of work on the construction site.
• More than 28 million U.S. Children are living in poverty. Poverty is a severe threat to children’s health, growth and potential.
• Women building together offers tremendous empowerment. Women apply the confidence gained through this experience to other aspects of their lives.
• Women Build participants make lasting friendships, learn construction skills, see tangible results of their efforts, have fun, create a sense of pride and
accomplishment – and make a positive impact in the life of a family in need.
• Quality, affordable housing encourages family stability, educational achievement and responsible citizenship.
• The cost to fully sponsor a family to live in a house starts at $44,000; there are many different levels of sponsorship. Houses are sold with no interest.
• A family selection committee evaluates prospective homeowners using three criteria: (1) Need for quality, affordable housing; (2) Willingness to partner with Habitat
(minimum 300 “sweat equity” hours and 10 hours of educational classes about homeownership); (3) Ability to repay a zero percent interest mortgage.
