Stability and self-reliance are actually obtainable, not merely aspirational
Habitat for Humanity offers a hand up, not a hand out. Houses are not given away.
Habitat homeowners build their own homes alongside volunteers, complete education classes, and pay an affordable mortgage. With your help, those homeowners are empowered, confident, and determined to achieve their own independence to build a better life for themselves and their families for multiple generations. Homeowners can save more, invest in education, pursue opportunity, and have more financial stability.
Home buyer applicants undergo a thorough vetting process, including personal interviews and background checks, and qualify based on three criteria: (1) need for quality, affordable housing; (2) willingness to partner with Habitat Birmingham (minimum 300 “sweat equity” hours and 10 hours of home ownership education workshops); and, (3) ability to repay a no interest mortgage and make down payment.
Homeowner education is a key component to long-term, successful home ownership. Potential home buyers complete 10 education classes about home ownership in a classroom setting that includes budgeting, fire prevention, homeowner insurance, mortgage contracts, and more. Plus, they participate in hands-on training in a classroom setting and on the construction site to avoid having to make a service call for a minor home repair.
